sunbeams from the january 2008 issue of The Sun

"one loses the capacity to grieve as a child grieves, or to rage as a child rages: hotly, despairingly, with tears of passion. one grows up, one becomes civilized, one learns one's manners, and consequently can no longer manage thses two funcions - sorrow and anger - adequately". (Anita Brookner)

"don't look forward to the day you stop suffering, because when it comes, you'll know you're dead". (Tennessee Williams)

"if my life were not a dangerous, painful experiement, if i did not constantly skirt the abyss and feel the void under my feet, my life would have no meaning and i would not have been able to write anuthing". (Herman Hesse)

and my favorite:

"if you're really listening, if you're awake to the poignant beauty of the world, your heart breaks regularly". (Andrew Harvey)

i like this one a lot because it's so encompassing. you can't truly experience beauty and bliss if you can't allow yourself or if you're unable to experience pain and suffering. the point is not the beauty or the pain. the point is that your heart is open and hence you experience all these different aspects of life deeply.
