we moved our chickens into the greenhouse a couple of weeks ago, after we harvested all the carrots and lettuces we had in there. we wanted them to be able to get some fresh greens at this time of year. aiyana is our chicken manager and expert echicken catcher. here she is in the process of bringing them into the greenhouse. the chickens love it in there, of course: protected, warm, and fresh greens available. the only problem was that we moved two flocks, which are normally in two separate coops, and as soon as they were free to mingle, they started to fight with each other. the two rosters foughts, and the hens fought too. soon enough though, they established new territories, each flock hanging to one corner of the greenhouse, and it was settled.

here they are pecking through some compost i brought them
this is "Prince", one of our roosters. sena and aiyana are in charge of collecting eggs daily, and so they know the chickens really well, and give them names. Prince is quite a character. he would not let the other rooster approach any of the ladies from his coop when the two flocks were free to mix together.
aiyana the animal lover
Midnight, our rodent patrol is being quite lazy at this time of year. i don't know how many rodents he's getting, but i think he could be getting more. i see the damage they're doing out there in the spinach, so i know there are lots of them. we'll have to stop pampering him so much i guess. but he did win us all over, so it's hard to be very strict with him.
we did get some snow last week, although i still feel like winter hasn't really come yet. it's been so warm, it's quite unsettling.
peace

Wow. The chickens are beautiful! Thanks for sharing the photos.
I keep thinking we will get up to Storrs one of these days, hopefully before the planting season gets really intense for you guys.
I'm starting to plan our garden this year, and I think it is safest for us to use raised beds since we are in such a densely populated area. We are thinking that instead of joining a CSA in our area, we will invest that money in making a better vegetable garden in our backyard.
hope to see you soon!
Emily
