two pieces from the prophet

a young woman was standing in line in front of me at the cafe today. she had a big coat on, and i realized that she was holding a tiny baby under it. she was so gentle and tender with the baby, and they looked beautiful together. i was touched by her way of being, and by the whole scene. i almost burst into tears standing there, and i'm not sure if it was because they were so beautiful together, or because i was feeling a little sad for my own loss. probably both, but at that moment, i really couldn't tell whether my tears were joy or sorrow. which brings me to a piece by Khalil Gibran, which my sister shared with the rest of us at the women circle on monday night. many years ago, i made a book with Gibran's "The Prophet" and my own pictures as a gift for my sister. now, when she shared it with us at the circle, it felt like she was giving me a gift. it's funny how things come around. anyway, I very much related to this piece on joy and sorrow, and the one on pain as well. they both brought me great comfort.

if you are interested, here they are: Joy and Sorrow and Pain.
